you see i was always too scared to skateboard and was never allowed to ride a motor bike. seeing these guys perform for an hour so fearlessly was very impressive. erin and i have been watching the Xgames 14 this week. we both are fascinated at these guys willingness to put their life's in danger for something they are so passionate about. i'm glad my passion allows me to generally stand in one place and press and depress my pointer finger.... sometimes however my legs get tired and my fingers cramp. i guess i can relate.
seriously these guys have my respect and if you've never felt that way about extreme sports, listen to tony hawk for 5 minutes and i'm sure you'll feel otherwise. was there a skate park in homewood that got shut down? tony hawk said something about it to the crowd and how he had written the mayor about it. i still would never get on skateboard but sign me up for the picket line to bring back the skate park. i have been enlightened and it's time for change. "yes we can"

the skate park in homewood did get shut down, and my understanding was that it was merely because the kids were not wearing their safety gear. I dont know what you were told... and I am all for a skate park, but everytime that we went there, it was always really hard for me to watch all of the "older" kids hanging out and doing tricks without helmets and all of the younger wannabe-ers watching. I know I am a mama but as I looked at your photos, I noticed that all those guys were wearing safety gear. It just seems to me that if Tony Hawk knew that all of that was going down (especially if he is the role model that I think he is)... he would be more understanding. The way that it was set up, there was not way to monitor whether the kids were following the rules. there is/was a skate park in Vestavia that is monitored.
wow that did sound like a mama. i'm sure tony never heard the reason for why it was closed. i'm sure his help was solicited by a mob of disgruntled teens... of which i saw a good number at the show. i agree with you though. in watching the x games, there would have been a dozen riders dead or seriously injured if they weren't wearing safety gear. it's a goo enough reason to shut it down.
